Ambient

Year: 2019

Type of project: University

Typeology: Art Annex

Location: Oakland

The brief called for an Annex art gallery for the Oakland Museum of California, to be located a few blocks away from the existing museum in Oakland CA.

Requirements for the annex was a space for viewing 4 to 5 small sculptures, 30 linear feet of wall for light-sensitive artwork and most significantly - designed to be 100% naturally daylit.

Ambient was designed through physical model iterations, allowing for experimentation with materials and real life light conditions. The interior intents to provide an honest articulation of the exterior light, while flattening the contours to a blurred out background, in order to leave attention to the object in focus - the art.

The translucency of the polycarbonate cladding that captures, filters and disperses light to the annex provides the phenomena from which the name derives

- Ambient.
